The Lashings FC line-up, managed by Guy Butters, included Matthew Le Tissier, former England internationals Darren Anderton (left) and Paul Walsh, as well as AFC Bournemouth legends James Hayter, John Bailey, Ian Cox, Russell Beardsmore and Warren Cummings.
The team will be playing a series of matches in 2019 and Lashings Director Scott Charlton explained the team’s philosophy. “This is a chance for us to assist non-league clubs and retired professionals,” he said. “Outside the Football League, in particular, clubs can find it very difficult just to survive and pay their bills. These events are a great way of raising revenue and at the same time helping the foundation support other worthy local sporting activities such as cricket, with coaching and mentoring.
”The newly-formed Lashings Foundation is an organisation dedicated to the twin aims of supporting grassroots sports clubs and their volunteers, while also helping sports stars cope with life after retirement. “A lot of players enjoy active and happy retirements,” said Scott.
“Most of our players play for the sheer love of it, but not everyone finds life easy when their careers come to an end. Some struggle with injuries that reduce their mobility, some just can’t replace the buzz they used to get from playing and others have mental health issues. Retired sports stars are especially at risk from depression and this is where we want to help, by giving them the chance to coach and mentor young players, while entertaining the parents who remember their glory days.”
